Addressing Climate Challenges
Our climate pillar is dedicated to implementing sustainable solutions that address the urgent challenges of climate change, promote biodiversity, and foster resilient communities. We work with local partners to create lasting environmental impact through innovative programs and community engagement.
Our Climate Initiatives
Programs focused on sustainability and resilience.
Community-Led Climate Resilience Hubs By Women and Youth
Building local capacity for climate adaptation and disaster preparedness in climate-vulnerable counties (e.g., ASAL regions). Includes climate-smart farming demonstrations, drought and flood risk mapping, training on ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), access to climate information services, and policy dialogue platforms. Potential Partners: NDMA, Kenya Meteorological Department, County Governments, UNDP, FAO.
Urban Greening and Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for Cities
Reclaiming urban spaces for climate mitigation, biodiversity, and public health through scalable solutions like green corridors, wetlands restoration, vertical gardens, and green roofs. Includes community-managed micro forests (e.g., Miyawaki method), public space rehabilitation using indigenous tree species, school and market greening programs, and urban carbon sequestration with air quality monitoring. Potential Partners: NEMA, Nairobi Metropolitan Services, UNEP, local county governments, KEFRI.
Green Tech for Climate Action (GTCA)
Integrating e-waste management with reforestation and green job creation in urban and peri-urban areas. Activities include establishing community-based e-waste collection centers, public campaigns on safe disposal, partnering with recyclers (e.g., WEEE Centre), using proceeds for tree-planting, and training youth in green tech skills. Expected Outcomes: Reduced pollution, circular economy model, job creation. Potential Partners: WEEE Centre, NEMA, Ministry of Environment, KEPSA, e-waste producers.
Youth Climate Innovation Lab
Fostering green entrepreneurship, climate tech, and civic action among youth with tools, mentorship, and seed funding for solutions in renewable energy, green jobs, circular economy, and advocacy. Includes climate hackathons, technical training in clean energy and GIS, youth-led projects (e.g., plastic-to-brick innovation), and policy dialogues. Potential Partners: Ministry of Youth Affairs, UN-Habitat, UNFCCC YOUNGO, local universities, private sector (e.g., Safaricom Foundation).
Climate, Health, and Ecosystem Nexus Initiative
Addressing interlinkages between climate change, public health, and ecosystem degradation to mitigate impacts like vector-borne diseases and food insecurity. Includes community health surveillance, ecosystem restoration (wetlands, forests), awareness campaigns on climate-sensitive diseases, and collaboration between health and environment sectors. Potential Partners: Ministry of Health, WHO, AMREF, Kenya Red Cross, Nature Kenya.
Tree Planting & Reforestation
Community-led tree planting campaigns to combat deforestation and enhance carbon sequestration, with thousands of trees planted annually in partnership with local schools and communities.
Renewable Energy Projects
Installing solar panels and promoting clean energy sources in rural communities to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and provide reliable power for homes and businesses.
Climate Education & Awareness
Workshops and campaigns to educate communities on climate change impacts and adaptation strategies, empowering individuals to make informed decisions for a sustainable future.
Sustainable Agriculture
Promoting eco-friendly farming practices to ensure food security in changing climates, including water conservation techniques and drought-resistant crops.
